Dušanka Janežič is a Senior Research Scientist in the Laboratory for Molecular Modeling and NMR Spectroscopy and the head of the Center for Molecular Modeling at the National Institute of Chemistry, Slovenia. She is also a Research Associate Professor at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia and a Special Volunteer at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.
Dušanka Janežič was born on May 21, 1952 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. She received her B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Since 1987, Dušanka Janežič has held several positions at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She has been an adjunct professor at the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, and a Research Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology.
Her research includes the determination of structure in inhomogeneous regions of atomic and molecular liquids, protein dynamics using Monte Carlo simulations, molecular dynamics methods, formalism of BGYB hierarchy of integral equations, as well as the RISM formalism of integral equations. Her current research focuses on the development of symplectic integration algorithms for molecular dynamics simulations and their application to simulations of macromolecules to provide better understanding of biological systems.
Dušanka Janežič's research has allowed her to be a guest researcher at many international institutions, including the Vienna University of Technology, Austria, the Technical University of Munich, Germany, and a Guest Researcher at the Office of Standard Reference Data at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA. At the Division of Computer Research and Technology of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, she was a Fogarty Visiting Fellow at the Molecular Graphics and Simulation Laboratory and a Senior Fullbright Scholar at the Laboratory of Structural Biology. As a recipient of the Deutcher Akademicher Austauschdienst award, she carried out research at the Technical University of Munich, Germany.
Dušanka Janežič has over one hundred scientific publications, and her work has been cited nearly three hundred times. She has helped organize several national and international conferences. She has also been advisor to several undergraduate and graduate students.
In the course of her research, Dušanka Janežič has been involved in many associations and research projects. Currently, she is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences, an American Chemical Society Publication, and has served as a Guest Editor and as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for this journal. She is a member of the International Society for Theoretical Chemical Physics, American Chemical Society, American Mathematical Society, Slovenian Society of Mathematicians, Physicists, and Astronomers, Slovenian Biophysical Society, and Slovenian Fullbright Alumni Association. She has also served as a Board Member of the Academic Research Network of Slovenia. Dušanka Janežič is the project leader of numerous national and international projects and works with many researchers throughout the world. Since 1993, she has hosted over 40 foreign visiting scientists.
In 1999, Dušanka Janežič received the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia in Science award.
When asked what is the greatest reward for a researcher, she replied: “I am happy to be able to contribute to the international recognition of Slovenia in the field of natural sciences.”
